Why I’m writing this (and why you might want to read it)

Ok, I’ll be upfront: no one needs another AI newsletter. Needless to say, this is a very saturated space, full of “X prompts to change your life” and other just as Buzzfeed-y articles.

And to convince you why this blog is different, I’ll lay out who I am and why I’m doing this.

My name is Tim. I’m a tech lead who’s been in the startup trenches most of my career. We’re talking about the kind of work that starts as a rough idea and thoughts on problems to solve, and ends up underpinning multi-million-pound contracts. As with most of us, through life and happenstance, my focus has turned out to be building applications that sit between enormous piles of data, and users looking to actually make use of that data, whether that be information on governance exposure and taking action to remediate, or the planned flows of work throughout large, complex warehouse systems.

“I’ve been using AI in every aspect of my work since it was just ‘auto-predict with extra thought’, watching it evolve into something that can now code an entire service (mostly) hands-free.”

Lately, I’ve had the brilliant opportunity to lead what I’d genuinely call an AI-native engineering team. That means AI isn’t a feature we bolt on later; it’s baked into how we think, build, and ship from day one.

My relationship with these tools goes back further than most. I was experimenting with GitHub Copilot when it was essentially slightly smarter auto-predict. I’ve watched ChatGPT evolve from a novelty into critical infrastructure. I’ve worked across models - Claude, GPT, open-source alternatives - not as a hobbyist playing around, but as someone who needs them to hold up in production environments where things actually matter.

I’ve lived through the hype cycles up close. I’ve seen tools promise to replace entire teams, only to quietly fade away. And I’ve also seen genuinely transformative shifts in how fast a small, sharp team can move when they use AI correctly. Tasks that would’ve taken weeks, now take an afternoon. All down to refining how we work with AI. I have also made mistakes with it, shipped things with it, and learned to distinguish the signal from the noise.

“Throughout all the hype, figuring out what’s real and useful vs what’s marketing is how we’ve built our team and processes to harness AI”

That’s what this blog is for. Practical, honest, grounded writing on AI from someone embedded in it, from rubber ducking, to writing epics and building services. Not watching from the sidelines. I’ll share what I’m building, what I’m thinking, what’s working, and yes, occasionally what isn’t.

If you’re an engineer, a founder, a tech leader, or just someone trying to figure out what any of this means for the way you work; I hope you stick around for the ride.
